Semidiurnal Tidal Motions in the Friction Layer

چکیده
The obscrved semidiurnal wind in the troposphere at five niid-latmit,ude stations shows a, phase lead over the wind dcduccd from frictionlcss theory, and a smaller amplitude, espccially near the earth’s surface, than the theoretical value. By making use of the obscrved fact that the tidal pressure-dependent (frictionless) wind changes much less rapidly with height than does the observed wiiid in the friction layer, it is possible to extend the Ekman theory t o explain approximately the observcd solar semidiuriial wind distribution. It is concluded that the existcncc of surfacc friction causes the timc of maximum of the semidiurnal pressure wave t o be advanced relative to the timc tha t frictionless theory should predict; or, in agreement with Gold’s conclusion tha t friction produces a phase lag of the tidc with iiicreaue in elevation. The theoretical argument would appear t o be valid for the lunar atmospheric tide also, but dircct evidence tha t similar coiiclusioiis apply t o the lunar tide is lacking.

Current observations from a shelf sea, continental slopes and the abyssal North-East Atlantic Ocean are all dominated by the semidiurnal lunar (M2) tide. It is shown that motions at M2 vary at usually large barotropic and coherent baroclinic scales, >50 km horizontally and >0.5 H vertically. H represents the waterdepth. Such M2-scales are observed even close to topography, the potential source ...

متن کاملRadar wind profiler observations of solar semidiurnal atmospheric tides
Semidiurnal solar tides in the mid-latitude troposphere are investigated using harmonic analysis of 404 MHz radar profiler wind data obtained from a wide longitude zone in the U.S. The tides are apparent above a 1000-m-deep surface layer and increase in amplitude with height, attaining speeds of 0.5-0.7 rn/s at 5-7 km. Observed wind characteristics agree well with tidal characteristics obtained...
متن کاملStudy of Current Profile in the Khuran Channel using ADCP Measurements
Thirteen repetitions of a cross-channel transect in the Khuran Channel within the Strait of Hormuz allowed the description of the mean flow and semidiurnal tidal properties of a northsouth transect. Water velocity profiles were obtained with a 614.4 kHz TRDI Work Horse Broadband ADCP along this 3.3 km long transect on 10 October 2014, the third day of secondary spring tide. The M2, M4 and M6 fr...
متن کاملWavelet analysis of lunar semidiurnal tidal influence on selected inland rivers across the globe
The lunar semidiurnal influence is already known for tidal rivers. The moon also influences inland rivers at a monthly scale through precipitation. We show that, for some non-tidal rivers, with special geological conditions, the lunar semidiurnal tidal oscillation can be detected. The moon has semidiurnal tidal influence on groundwater, which will then export it to streamflow. Long time series ...
